Fu Hui Alumni Children Companion Activity
The Children Companion Activity is a joint project carried out by the Fu Hui Liangshan Project Team and Liu Qingsong Workshop of Sichuan Panxi Prison. It aims to benefit children whose parents are absent or come from poor families. Fu Hui Alumni organized a volunteer team to help students with their homework and conduct extra curricula activities during holidays. They have also invited social workers to carry out sessions on various topics, including mental health, general science, basic legal education, life safety etc.
From March 4 to July 1, 2023, the team held regular activities on 16 Saturdays. Over this period, a total of 22 children and 22 volunteers participated in the project. In the morning volunteers assisted the children in completing their homework, In the afternoon they organized extra curricula activities such as handicrafts, drawing, and dancing. To ensure the children’s food safety and reduce commuting, meals were provided. In an effort to instill a sense of civic responsibility, the children were assigned tasks they could handle, such as assisting volunteers to tidy up classrooms, cleaning up fallen leaves in the community, etc...
During the drawing class, children unleashed their imaginations on paper, creating innocent and imaginative artwork with their brushes.
In the dance classes, the children danced freely with confidence and self-expression to the cheerful music rhythm.
In the handicraft classes, under the guidance of volunteers, children cut out intricate window grilles and shaped the clay into works of art.
In addition, children engaged in sports activities to enhance their physical fitness; played with building blocks to stimulate their cognitive development; and read books to broaden their knowledge.
A 10-day summer camp was held from July 7, 2023. Camp life was filled with excitement and a wide range of activities. In addition to tutoring summer homework, volunteers introduced interesting English classes, teaching children vocabulary and singing English songs, thereby building a foundation in English knowledge and overcoming any fear in learning the language.
In the craft course, students learn to make sandwiches and improve their hands-on skills.
The natural science course provides students with basic scientific knowledge, preparing them for junior high school while fostering their ability to seek knowledge and develop practical skills.
During calligraphy exercises, volunteers demonstrated pen-holding techniques and calligraphic skills. Through the writing process, children learn to focus and remain calm.
This school year, under the joint effort of both the children and volunteers, the Children Companion Activity was successfully completed. Over the 26 days of companionship, students acquire various skills and created numerous works of art. They were physically and mentally strengthen. The volunteers were also moved by the innocence and charm of the children, which bolstered their own sense of self-worth. From initial unease to mutual trust, both volunteers and students learned from each other and progressed together, leaving unforgettable memories for each other.
