Fu Hui Supports Aboriginal Nutrition Project

On June 19th, Fu Hui Chairman Stanley Kwan, President Judy San, and other Board Members; visited the Hillside School located on the Kettle and Stony Point First Nation Reserve close to Sarnia, in order to better understand the Aboriginal community and culture,. They participated in a tour of the community and the school, and a students Pow Wow that incorporated traditional clothing and dance.

At the end of the visit, the school’s Principal, Cathy Hampshire, approached Fu Hui with a funding request to provide a nutritional program to 200 Aboriginal children in her school. A healthy meal goes a long way to keeping students focused throughout the day. With that in mind, the Board approved the project and initiated a $40,000 fundraising campaign to be handled by Fu Hui’s young volunteers.

After establishing the youth committee in September, a second trip was organized to Hillside School. A handful of young volunteers along with several Board Members made the trip to Hillside School on November 7th. This time, a cultural exchange was planned with the students to build mutual understanding of each other’s distinctive cultures.In Fu Hui tradition, we also gave each student a laminated maple leaf with Chinese phrases and explained their significance. 

Overall, the visit was very meaningful and both sides thoroughly enjoyed the gathering. The experience certainly inspired the volunteers and boosted their motivation to help the project succeed. It was a great privilege to meet the students of Hillside School, and learn more about their Aboriginal traditions. We hope more of the younger generation will get involved, join the campaign, and give back to underprivileged communities across Canada.
