All Girls Program - Student Activities
Get to Know the world in Summer Camp
My name is Sandra and I graduated in June from the Fu Hui HuiLi all-girls class #4. Because of Fu Hui, I was able to attend the summer camp for the past three years.
Get to know Skype
While I was looking forward to my first summer camp (Junior 1 – Grade 7), I was frightened and nervous. But I soon discovered that the camp was not that bad after all. With the encouragement from teachers and classmates, I began to adapt; but before I knew it, the camp was over. Because the camp was only two weeks long, there was not enough time for me to adapt slowly.
I attended the second summer camp (Junior 2 – Grade 8) with the same excitement, but without the fear. Instead I got curious because this camp added something new called Skype. Before the camp, we had no idea of what Skype can do or how to use it. But we were not scared, we just wanted to learn Skype and learn quickly.
Get to learn with passion
What about this year – Junior 3 (Grade 9) and my third year in the summer camp program? There wasn’t anything new in the camp and we all joined the camp nonchalantly. Despite the laid-back attitude, this was the camp where we had the most fun and one that we would cherish the most. Maybe graduation (from Junior High) has something to do with it, and / or the relief from learning the results (of the public examination at end of Junior High). While we continued our studies at the camp, we worked with our teachers to decide on the next steps of our education.
The thing I like the most about my class is our passion for discussion - regardless of the topic, and this is particularly true at the summer camp. Over the course of the camp, we discussed a great many subjects. Since nobody wanted to miss their turns, we all rushed to raise our hands so we could speak our minds. All these mad scrambling just made things more exciting, and it greatly improved the learning atmosphere and environment.
Get to know yourself
Children are usually ignorant and naive, but through the camp’s "who am I" activity, we unwittingly discover ourselves. We get to recognize and appreciate our personality traits, and better understand what we like and what we are good at. More importantly, we define our hopes and dreams. With a set of clear goals, the dreams of the all-girls class #4 is no longer just a fantasy.
Get to know the world
In a way, the summer camp is like a special tour; first we traveled through China and then the world. We visited Toronto and saw the CN Tower - which was built 40 years ago; and at 553 meters, it is the tallest building in Canada. We went to Paris to admire the Eiffel Tower, and then Egypt to listen to the deep silence at the Great Pyramids of Giza. We also went to a lot of other places - Acropolis, Statue of Liberty, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Sydney Opera House, Big Ben, Merlion and other famous landmarks.
The summer camp has brought us so much - it is something that we shall always talk about and it has become an indispensable part of our lives.
*Skype is a English conversation class for the students in summer camp, volunteers from North America connected with the students on Skype to read and practice every day conversations.
