To the Most Needy Places

Approximately 80% of the donations is being used in the Sichuan’s Liangshan prefecture to provide various educational opportunities to the children there.[1]

According to a 2008 report from Sichuan provinces ’ Institute of Sociology, “Liangshan is the nation’s largest Yi settlement, the Yi population is 43.5%. At the end of 2006, the rural population totaled 378.65 million among which 373.900 are impoverished, 559,000 are of low income. The poverty rate was 9.88%, much higher than the country’s average for the same period.  Among the seventeen counties in the province, eleven were listed by the country as being in dire need of financial assistance.

Because of Liangshan’s poverty and primitiveness, the children there face numerous educational difficulties with high drop out rates. Due to the ever decreasing educational levels from one generation to another, it has become very hard for them to break out of the poverty cycle. This in turn created many social problems, such as crime, drug addiction, AIDS etc.

In 2005, Fu Hui decided to undertake the opening of Orphan Classes in the poorest area of Liangshan on our own.

Girls Have the Lowest Enrollment Rate in School

One of Fu Hui’s focuses is to assist the poor county of Meigu where the dropout rate among the children is high and the enrollment rate among the girls is critically low.

Enabling the girls to receive an education not only allows them to be independent and build their own future, as future mothers, they will have deep impacts on the next generation. In 2009, Fu Hui opened the first junior high All Girls’ Class.

Vocational Training to meet Society’s Needs

In Liangshan, only a portion of the junior high school graduates are able to enter senior high school or university. Vocational training is a more practical route for them and society is indeed in need of skilled personnel in various fields.

In the case of pre-school education, in 2015 Liangshan Yi Prefecture Government declared “the Pre-school Education has a shortage of 18,000 teachers” [2], Fu Hui has already began working with the Pre-School Education Teachers’ College to subsidize an entire class, to train and to encourage the graduates to teach in the rural villages and poor mountainous re- gions. On the other hand, we are also subsidizing an entire class of Geriatric Care student, to meet the needs of caring for an aging population. As early as 2009, Fu Hui had already assisted students to enroll in various vocational schools, adhering to the idea of “ongoing support” to enable the students to have a marketable skill and be able to contribute to soci- ety.

Fu Hui continues to provide scholarships and bursaries to senior high school and university stu- dents in other part of China, subsidization to the Preschool education in Liangshan and contin- ues to participate in the Canadian Aboriginal Program.
