Edi Luo Qie. He was in the first Fu Hui Starlet class, receiving subsidies since Grade One. Now he is a Class of 2014 student at the Shanghai Shipping Factory Technical School. Like many of our orphans, his parents died many years ago, and his older siblings all got married, started their own families leaving only him and his little brother Edi Luo Cheng to fend for each other. When he graduated from Butuo Secondary School in 2014, he was awarded a Fu Hui scholarship to study at the Shanghai Shipping Factory Technical School, majoring in welding and assembly training, thus taking the first step on his journey out of LiangShan.
Dispirited
When he first arrived in Shanghai, Edi Luo Qie’s poor command of Mandarin often became a laughing stock among his classmates. While on a Work Study program during his first winter break, the big difference between a Yi Tribe youngster and a big city youth was obvious. His coworkers’ constant ridicule affected his self - confidence. There was a time when he was really down, to the point of depression. Once I realized the situation, I would make a point of connecting with him by phone, checking in to cheer him up, and counsel him. Fu Hui’s president Michael Tse made a special trip to visit him at his workplace to console and encourage him. After he returned to school, I often have one-on-one chats with him, and played basketball or ping pong with him to take his mind of his stresses, to slowly build up his self esteem. I would remind him that this is a rare opportunity to leave the Mountainous Region and see the outside world. I urged him to treasure every moment at school, to take full advantage of the opportunity to learn. He also owed it to himself and to the uncles and aunties of Fu Hui who care so much about him to do his best.
Cheerful
Soon after that, Edi Luo Qie seemed to have gone through a transformation into a different person. Not only did he become positive and optimistic, he also had lots of confidence. In one short semester, he made many friends, and his grades rose from being near the bottom of the class to one of the top few. In addition he became the teacher’s trusted helper, a role model for his classmates, and was even selected as the class council secretary.
Luo Qie is the sole bread winner of his family. He needs to support himself as well as his brother who was finishing secondary school in Butuo. Since he started studying at the technical school in August 2014, he has worked every school holiday, earning over $10,000 RMB to cover his own living expenses and to help out his brother.
He was despondent and lost at one time. Now Luo Qie has successfully passed all his examinations and is doing a work placement at Shanghai XiongJie Medical Equipment Company. His supervisor has high praises for him as he embarks on his professional career. His younger brother a Edi Luo Cheng a new secondary school graduate applied to study at Shanghai Shipping Factory Technical School. On August 19, 2016 the starlet brothers from the remote mountainous region of Liangshan reunited in this international metropolis of Shanghai. Fu Hui donors believe, and I believe, that one day soon they will have carved out a place for themselves in Shanghai, becoming true shining stars of Fu Hui.
